Community in Theatre

"Unity is strength... when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved." - Mattie Stepanek

We believe that collaboration is an integral part of great theatre. Through the meeting of minds and clashing of ideas, we strive to bring quality innovative theatre to the Albuquerque community. Over the years, SCRAP has developed collaborative relationships with a number of other organizations dedicated to pushing the boundaries of theatre and performance. Please take a moment to support our collaborators listed below.

UNM Department of Theatre and Dance

Mission Statement

The Department of Theatre and Dance provides a broad, liberal arts education in the related performing arts of Dance, Theatre and Design for Performance that cultivates critical thinking and analysis as well as helping students build the basic skills for creative expression. For emerging artists and specialists, we provide tools to build careers in their chosen field and networks to the professional world, both nationally and internationally. We serve the community through high quality performance events that showcase student and faculty artistic work and serve as a laboratory for applying skills learned in the classroom and studio.

Vision

The UNM Department of Theatre and Dance, building on the rich cultural and artistic diversity of the state of New Mexico as well as on national and international influences, aims to serve its students through education and training in Dance, Design for Performance, and Theatre in an environment that supports exploration, artistic curiosity, experimentation, risk-taking, creative collaboration, and innovative projects across disciplines.

Values

We embrace the future and are open to new ways of conceiving of and creating theatre and performance. We develop new works in new ways and build bridges for interdisciplinary work within and beyond the department. We are committed to the collaborative process and to nurturing it with our students. Knowing our students is important to us.  We aim to serve their needs, broaden their thinking and prepare them for the larger world.  We build upon the expertise and connections of current and future faculty to think and act globally so as to embody the importance of the performing arts to celebrate individual expression, build community, and engage with the issues of our life and times.

Blackout Theatre Company

Blackout is a theatre company founded in 2007 with the goal of creating new and original works, as well as pushing the boundaries of published works. Working as an ensemble, the company will primarily use comedy to explore different facets of theatre and the performing arts. Blackout also seeks to foster an environment of artistic exploration in the community at large via outreach and collaborative efforts.

The Ensemble: Blackout creates productions as an ensemble in which everyone is trained to do everything. No one is simply an actor, or a designer, or a writer. Everyone participates and collaborates in every step of the artistic process from conception to opening night, to touring. This ensemble is also known as Blackout’s Artistic Core. Blackout is also dedicated to growing and exploring artistically together, and thus provides training and workshops in areas in which members are interested in exploring. Thus new ideas and modes of performance are constantly developing.

Innovation: Blackout strives to take artistic risk through the creation of new works and the exploration and implementation of extreme physicality, guerilla, and environmental theatre. Blackout also dedicates itself to exploration not only on the stage but on film and in other multi-media environments.

Outreach: Blackout strives to reach out to the community at large, not only to provide performance and training opportunities to those who are interested, but to learn from other artists and constantly incorporate new ideas. Blackout is always interested in collaboration. Using vehicles such as Blackout Tonight, Blackout hopes to teach, learn, create and play with as many artists from the community as possible.

Auxiliary Dog Theatre

One day, a group of aimless college graduates decided to start a theatre company. The Auxiliary Dog opened its doors for the first time three years later. Since its beginning, the theatre has been home to a plethora of companies including Growing Stage, Goodpasture, Enchanted Rose, Ka-HOOTZ, I of the Storm, Sol Arts, Tricklock, Mile High Riot, Apocracy Theatre, and SCRAP Productions. It has grown in its audience base, its support staff, its talent pool, and its building renovations.

Taking over the space next door, Aux Dog Studio opens its doors to yoga classes, Pilates, dance classes, martial arts, rehearsal space, and more performances. The theatre's original mission statement, written by Browning, was to share love of theatre through universal works of art. Sounds a bit generic, but the thought behind it was featuring a number of art forms such as paintings in the lobby, live music before performances, improvisation, variety shows, writers, sculptors, and even culinary artists; in other words, “works of art” not limited to theatre. By “universal,” the meaning is to offer something for everyone with a every kind of performance from classic to traditional to new age to experimental.
